When we partnered with the NSSL earlier this year, we didn’t really know what to expect. We knew there would be contests. We knew there would be middle-school/high-school teams. We knew there would be skateboarding. But we had no clue what we were about to see.
Each contest surpassed the next as we watched groms and young adults destroy cement and wood parks all across Southern California. Ladies and gentlemen, the bar has been raised. Skateboarding, you are now placed in “Check”. It’s probably your next move before you hear, “Checkmate”. These youth have pressed forward at each stop cheering on one another, pushing each other, and having an absolute blast all the while. My only regret is that my school/leagues never offered this growing up (at least AYSO had orange slices).
The future of skateboarding is bright. And the talent in the NSSL holds a majority of the candles. As we go into the next season, we eagerly anticipate the growth and level of skateboarding. Though there are winners and losers in these contest environments, we can never forget the reason why we are all here and the fact that we are fortunate enough to do this everyday. Skateboarding is not just a sport; it is a lifestyle.
Below is the farewell contest album to the 2012/13 season and there will also be an awards ceremony soon that is TBA. It’s been a great ride and congrats to all the winners. See ya next year!
