Surfing is a weird sport, period, so let’s take a look at 5 Things People Might Not Know about our beloved water sport ….
1. It’s the hardest sport to learn.
Anyone can kick a ball, make a basket or ski down a hill. Not everyone can stand up on a surfboard and ride laterally along the wave face. Going straight for ten seconds doesn’t count, and while surf schools can teach people to surf, they can’t teach people how to be surfers.
2. There’s not much money in it.
Compared to other sports, surfing is on the low end in terms of pay. What a pro surfer makes in a year is about as much as the golfer who places last place in the Masters. In a world when 20 million dollar baseball contracts are the norm, the sport of surfing rarely signs anyone for a million bucks! It just doesn’t happen.
3. Not everyone’s “Surfing California”
Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is surfing in California. Surfing in the Golden State is still considered a fringe sport. Only a surfer knows the feeling!
4. Surfing … it’s not just for oceans anymore!
Today there are rivers to surf, tidal bores to charge, and man made waves to rip on. While there was a time when only the ocean had waves, more and more freshwater waves are popping up all over the globe, and surfers are flocking to them like mad!!
5. The current world champion has been dominating the sport since the 1980s!
No other sport has a Champion like the sport of surfing’s champ, Kelly Slater. He dominated the amateur ranks in the ‘80s, and hit the world tour in the ‘90s clinching several world titles… He took his act into the new Millennium and won a half dozen more. More than 20 years later he currently sits at the top of professional surfing’s ratings and is going for his 12th World Title in 2013. Put it this way, he’s gnarlier than Derek Jeter, and way more mental than Tiger Woods.
