4 Action Sports You Never See When You Look UP!

In the air. That’s where you’ll find today’s most exciting action sports professionals and enthusiasts. Off the skate ramp, air. Off the mountain, air. Off the wave, air. Air, air, air. It’s all about catching air on a board. But what about catching the most air ever? Like from the Air? Here are 4 Action Sports you never see when you look up…..

1. Sky Surfing
“Hey, look up in the sky, Kelly Slater’s catching a 20,000 footer! Not.” Exactly. That’s because sky surfing is about as popular as playing beach volleyball on horseback. While it sounds amazingly fun, truth is, if I’m falling from the sky at a hundred miles an hour or faster, I don’t want my feet strapped to anything. We’ve been raised on the classic parachuter position of laying flat with your arms and legs spread out…. But to stand up strapped onto a board? No way. But some guys do it. It’s just not something you see offered in the hotel lobby. Another thing is, surfers don’t parachute. While they love surfing, and take the fear of dying in big surf serious, none of them are going out of their way to blow the next surf for a parachuting trip. And none of the world’s best are going anytime soon. Surfing on water is one thing, surfing in the air is almost unheard of.

2. Air Racing
“Hey, look up in the sky, is that your dad air racing his plane? Not.” Exactly. That’s because, aside from the Red Bull events you see on TV, this is about as fringe as it gets in the flying world. Not to mention it’s one of the all time craziest action sports in the world, a cross between Travis Pastrana in a short track car and a Japanese kamikaze pilot from World War 2. It’s like Nascar in the air, but without the fan base. That’s because 100% of Americans drive and are racing their own little Nascar series to and from work everyday. They can relate. Less than 1% will ever learn to race an airplane, if that. So if you want to see airplanes race, don’t look up in the sky toward your local municipal airport. It’s not gonna happen.

3. Paragliding
“Hey, look up in the sky, that kid Brock in your class is taking his paraglider for a spin! Not.” Exactly. But why does paragliding sound so fun? It’s gotta be amazing, but flying in a small plane is crazy enough. Think about Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Or Payne Stewart. For some reason, when it comes to flying, bigger is better. More is less. Less worry. Perhaps one of the reasons paragliding its losing popularity is because not enough kids are doing it. They are not tweeting about it, and they’re not posting about it on their facebook. It’s just not cool. It’s downright crazy.

4. Hang Gliding
“Hey, look up in the sky, Strider from down the Street is taking his Hang Glider out for a ride! Not.” Exactly. That’s because hang gliding was pretty much only cool in the 60s and 70s. As things in the world become easier to use, the good old hang glider’s been like that dorky cousin…. A little too much work. Too technical. Too much preparation. In a day and age where we’re busier than ever, who really has the time to take their hang glider out for spin? Maybe today’s youth are just not that into it. Hang Gliding Tweets are down, and the youth of today certainly aren’t tweeting about the new 20-year-old World Champ from San Diego, nor are they taking lessons or booking hang gliding trips. Sure, it’s beautiful to watch; just show up at the TorreyPinesGliderPort in La Jolla, CA any day of the week and you’ll see some of the world’s best! But it takes a certain type of person in 2013 to jump off a mountain while tied to a rickety little aircraft that looks more like it was designed by the Wright Brothers than Boeing Industries. And the thought of an evil updraft or gust of wind, well don’t get me started. That’s why you won’t go hang gliding either.
