As we round the halfway mark of Summer 2013, surfboard shaping legend Doc Lausch fills us in on exactly what we should be doing before the end of the season….
By Doc Lausch
1. Take a surf/camp trip at least twice a year…. mandatory.
2. Build a quiver with the goal of having a board for every conceivable condition.
3. Switch up your fins before you give up on a board the magic combination could be one set away.
4. Get a board with five fin boxes and try every combination.
5. Give a surf lesson… share the stoke.
6. Keep your gills wet. The older you get the more important this becomes.
7. Get a board shorter than you think you can ride.
8. Learn (and know) your volume number.
9. Keep a record of your board’s dimensions and notes on performance. Your shaper is way too busy to do it for you.
10. If you have (or ever had) a magic board let your shaper know. You tip a waitress who brings you a drink from the bar, right? Well, your shaper put his blood, sweat, heart and soul into making your dream ride, and a six-pack is always a nice gesture… just sayin’.
